1. Why use a wheel-style spacer instead of a standard concrete block or clip spacer for piles?
Standard static spacers or concrete blocks will slide against the borehole wall as the cage is lowered. In bored piles, this scraping motion digs into the soil, causing loose earth to cave into the bottom of the pile, which ruins the concrete base mix. A wheel spacer rolls smoothly, protecting the earth walls.
2. Will these spacers slip or slide down the rebar when hitting obstructions?
No. The central clip is molded with internal locking ridges that grip the ribs of the steel reinforcement firmly, preventing any vertical or horizontal slippage during installation.
3. Does the plastic material weaken the overall strength of the concrete pile?
No. Because the wheels feature an open-spoke profile, the wet concrete flows completely through and around them. They occupy a fraction of the structural area and form an tight, continuous bond with the surrounding mix.
4. Can these spacers be used with Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piling?
Yes, they are highly recommended for CFA piles where the steel cage must be plunged directly into the pre-filled wet concrete column, as the wheel design minimizes resistance during insertion.
5. Can these pile cage spacers be clipped onto the main vertical structural rebar instead of the horizontal helical links?
It is highly recommended to clip these spacers onto the horizontal helical wrap or links (the transverse reinforcement) rather than the main vertical bars. When clipped onto the horizontal wires, the wheel rotates parallel to the downward motion of the cage as it is lowered into the borehole. If attached horizontally to a vertical bar, the wheel would be dragged sideways rather than rolling, which defeats the anti-scraping design and increases the risk of the spacer shearing off.
